So this is not my idea but I thought it was a good one.
Cut some simple shapes either by hand or I used SNC and basic shapes cut at 4inch high.
Lay on top of some felt slightly bigger add a piece of ribbon or jute twine in-between the two layers and stitch in place, then carry on working your way down the shape using decorative stitches from your machine.
I also used a blanket stitch around the outside edge, then I cut the felt away around the shape. On the oval shape one I trimmed close to the stitches but on the triangle I left about 2mm of felt showing I think I prefer it that way.
These could be made really big and hung on a craft room wall for Christmas too.

Heres an alternative method from Lynn one of my subscribers (Thank you)
Cut 4 circles all the same size.. placing two of them wrong sides together.
Fold two of them in half to use as the half circles… zipper goes in the two that are folded in half (half circles like you cut).
Attach zipper to half circles.
Place half circles with zipper wrong side down (open the zipper) on top of the other two circles and sew around outer edge to join them together
Turn right side out through opened zip.
